This paper presents a preliminary version of a bird indicator for biodiversity of agri-environments. It is based on extensive long-term censuses, and it is calculated from species specific change indices. It is composed of several subindicators which are based on ecological grouping of birds. Ecological groups can be created for particular needs, like for answering questions of impacts of agri-environmental schemes or other political issues. Grouping is aimed for enhancing the assessment of different factors on biodiversity de- velopment. The bird indicator describes historical development and summa- rizes the complexity of monitoring data in a comprehensive form. The "easi- ness" of interpretation of the indicator depends on the depth of understanding, its structure and behaviour. The bird indicator helps in recognizing environ- mental changes, which affect the breeding bird community and individual species or entire biodiversity. In its final form, the bird indicator reflects agri- cultural phases since the 1930s. The annual indicator reflects the impacts of the set-aside program in 1991–94 and national agri-environmental programs since 1995. A bird indicator can be used for recognising new threats for bio- diversity; it is an alert signaling tool. It also indicates needs for more detailed population ecological studies. The behaviour of the indicator is composed of population changes of its individual species. Changes in the indicator does not explain the causes, which may be multiple. The recognition of several factors and their interactions can be made with a modelling approach. The bird indicator can be used for predictions. When the role of different factors of landscape structure and other environment explaining the composition and diversity of the bird community and the distribution and abundance of indi- vidual species are known, these can be predicted into the past (for testing the models) and future.
