The interest towards research on learning games is continuously growing but little is known about the integration of games in teaching. In this literature review, we were interested in both the pedagogical foundations that underpin empirical studies as well as the teacher’s role regarding using games in education. The results show that only in part of the studies the use of learning games was based on a pedagogical approach. In those research papers, there was variation in how the teacher’s role was described. In some cases a pedagogical approach was evident when learning games were seen as part of a larger pedagogical structure. The study contributes to emerging research field on learning games and to developing pedagogies for game-based learning.
