    Sammanfattning

The book is a complete history of the creative work of the Russian actor and teacher of acting Mikhail Aleksandrovich Chekhov (St Petersburg 1891 - Los Angeles 1955). He worked in the First Studio of the Moscow Art Theatre under the direction of K. Stanislavsky and Y. Vakhtangov. As head of the Second Moscow Art theatre he created a symbolic and spiritual mode of expression and developed his method of acting, based on Stanislavsky's system and modern art and philosophy (R. Steiner). He worked in European theatres (1928 -38) and in the USA opened his Chekhov Theatre Players - company (1939 - 42). In Los Angeles he taught at acting classes, published two important books (To the Actor, in Russian and English). The Chekhov method was transferred by his American students in later studios and it is widely used nowadays in many countries.
