A considerable share of plant nitrogen uptake originates from the decomposition of soil organic matter and plant residues. Traditionally these have been taken into account in fertilizer planning by having recommended nitrogen levels for various classes of soil organic matter. However the amount of nitrogen mineralization depends also on overall soil health and microbial activity. If these could be measured more accurately, fertilizer recommendations could be tailored at field level.

The report describes new methods for estimating nitrogen mineralization from soil and presents measurement results from 24 test fields for a three year period. The report has two sections, the first one is a literature survey on the estimation methods and the second is an evaluation of the usefulness of the methods. Finally recommendations on the use of the methods for fertilizer planning are presented.
