Sammanfattning
The region of the Nordic and Baltic countries is located in the temperate climate zone, with northern Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland stretching out into the Arctic. According to the World Bank classification, they are all high-income countries, and the general level of hygiene is good. The most common community-acquired infections include upper respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis, undefined viral RTI and influenza, bronchitis, sinusitis, otitis), urinary tract infections, gastroenteritis and skin infections, all of which are universally ubiquitous across the globe. The overall prevalence of HIV remains below 1%, and retroviral treatment is provided free of charge. Tuberculosis is still common in Greenland and the Baltic countries; in the latter, multidrug-resistant TB constitutes a problem. Although proportions of intestinal (multi)drug-resistant bacteria have grown in clinical samples over the past decade, the rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remain low in all Nordic and Baltic countries.
