Sammanfattning

The writers ask whether professional language competences should be seen as separate from the general language competences and how this distinction affects teaching. The question is analyzed by interviewing four graduating Finnish for second language (F2) students of nursing and two charge nurses. The method for the interviews is based on a professional frame of reference for nursing in Finnish for second language. The professional frame of reference is developed into a semi-structured questionnaire about coping in challenging professional language situations. The content analysis reveals that the greatest
challenges exist in grammatical and terminological accuracy in patient documenting, reacting in telephone discussions, registering shifts in multilateral communication, and expressing professional identity. The positive attitude of colleagues and patients together with straightforward correcting were found as best support forms. This research shows the character of professional language as diversified and thus challenges the terminologybased
definitions of professional language. Any narrow definition that excludes the diverse interaction-based situations cannot serve as a basis of functional professional F2-teaching.
