Sammanfattning

In our study of Swedish crime fiction author Jens Lapidus’ two novels, Snabba cash from 2006 and Aldrig fucka upp from 2008, we investigate multilingual swearwords and insults and their translation into Finnish, German and English. Similar to its spoken counterpart, literary code-switching (or language switching) makes good use of swearwords, insults and other types of affective language and set expressions. Both multilingualism and taboo expressions present translators with very particular challenges as the language milieu changes. In the analysis presented in this article, we are especially interested in whether other-language items and taboo vocabulary are preserved or normalized in the translations, and discuss the translations in relation to the instructions of the author, which exceptionally were also available for this material. The results show that while the translations favour retaining multilingualism and taboo language, the solutions vary according to language and linguistic function.
