Sammanfattning

Speakers use prosodic means in order to group utterances together into larger units, speech para-graphs (Wichmann 2000). Even if phenomena related to paragraph intonation are well-documented in many languages, so far they have not been studied much in Finnish. This paper treats one essential aspect of paragraph intonation: the indication of dependency between utterances with the help of the so-called postponed pitch reset phenomenon. When this prosodic device is used, the onset of the new utterance is produced lower or on the same pitch level where the preceding one ends, but a subsequent syllable of the new utterance carries a raised pitch level (Wichmann 2000).
The main objective of the article consists of showing that the postponed pitch reset phenomenon can be found also in Finnish data, and that it is typically used to indicate dependency between utterances. In addition, the article aims at showing that in the written target text certain typographic features typically correspond to the occurrences of the postponed pitch reset. The data comes from two conference-like presentations interpreted by professional print interpreters. Methods of instrumental phonetics have been used in the analyses. Theoretically, the study is mainly based on Wichmann’s (2000) approach to discourse intonation. The paper is related to an interdisciplinary research project entitled “Print interpreting: process, comprehensibility, and technology”, funded by the Academy of Finland.
