Sammanfattning

Anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) release is the biggest factor contributing to climate warming. However, it is crucial to distinguish the natural exchange of GHGs from that caused by humans. The European research infrastructure, ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System), is a response to this need. Its aim is to provide accurate, long-term measurements both of GHG concentrations and of GHG exchange between the atmosphere and different ecosystems. The system will provide for instance maps with reliable estimates of GHG budgets in Europe with a better spatial and temporal resolution than has been possible so far, analogous to today’s weather forecasts that provide us with temperature predictions at locations throughout the continent. These budgets are the scientific basis of today’s policy making and a crucial component in climate change predictions. In Finland, the network consists of 16 measurement stations which represent different types of ecosystems ―ranging from forests, wetlands and lakes to cities. The Finnish network is maintained in a collaboration between the University of Helsinki, the University of Eastern Finland and the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
