abstract = "Equine granulocytic anaplasmosis is an acute tick-borne infection caused by an obligatory intracellular gram-negative bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum. In a horse it particularly infects granulocytes causing leucopaenia and thrombocytopaenia. Typical signs include high fever, reluctance to move, swelling of limbs and haematological changes. The diagnosis is made by detecting typical morulae in granulocytes in a blood smear or with PCR in acute cases. Later diagnosis is based on rise in antibody titre. The disease is usually self-limiting. The treatment of choice is oxytetracycline medication. A. phagocytophilum can infect several species including humans. The disease has been widely reported in horses in North America and Europe. The vectors of the disease are genus Ixodes ticks, of which Ixodes ricinus is present in Finland and the next of Europe. The distribution of I. ricinus in Finland has increased during the past few decades and it can be assumed that more cases of clinical anaplasmosis will appear. We report A. phagocytophilum infection in a horse in Finland, diagnosed on the basis of blood smear. The horse was treated at the Helsinki University Equine Teaching Hospital in the autumn of 2008.",
