Sammanfattning

The early modern Baltic Sea region saw an emergence of new literary vernaculars, vernacular print cultures and new forms of oral and literary expression. The process was strongly affected by the Reformation and Counter-Reformation but also connected to the strengthening hold of the emerging early modern states on provinces close to and far from the administrative centres. Social and communicative networks enabled the creation of new vernacular literary cultures although the traces left of the workings of these networks are often only sporadic. Early modern print culture, new literary vernaculars, letters, manuscripts and songs emerge in mutual interplay, embedded in complex social and communicative networks, of which only a part are documented in written sources. How to map and analyse the wealth of influences and interactions that had once spread across Northern Europe? This book offers eleven analytical reflections on this topic.

The aim of this chapter is to give the reader a closer view on the political turmoil, multilingual networks, creation of vernacular literary languages and interactions of oral and literary cultures during the two centuries after the Reformation in the Baltic Sea region. We introduce the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century political and religious turns in Scandinavia, Finland and Livonia and then discuss the developments of different socio-linguistic settings in the multilingual societies of the area, the beginnings of the print culture and folk education and changes in vernacular poetics. The chapter closes with a view on the social and literary networks in the background of these phenomena.
